Big fourth quarter swings Bangor JV girls past Brewer

BANGOR – The Bangor Ram girls' junior varsity team hosted the Brewer Witches in game one Tuesday night at Red Berry Gymnasium in Bangor High School.
The game started all Brewer as the Witches took a 6-1 first quarter lead and a 15-9 halftime advantage. The two teams scored evenly in the third quarter with Brewer taking a 21-15 lead into the final stanza. However, rolling to an easy win was not in the bounces for the Witches as Bangor outscored Brewer 17-8 for the 32-29 win.
Scoring for Bangor was, Lucy O'Connell with 11 points; Carly Andrews added seven including two 3-pointers; Emily Caulkins had six; Gabby Spreng four; and Gabby Gordon and Avery Fullwood two each. The young Rams were 6-of-14 (43 percent) from the foul line.
For Brewer, Gabby Chasse led the Witches with seven points including a 3-pointer; Olivia Gilmore and Emma Johnson added six each; Ainsley Goodwin and Maddie Shaw had four each; and Reece McKenney had two points. The Witches were 4-of-9 (44 percent) from the charity stripe.
It was a well played JV game with Bangor making a big come from behind effort for the win.

Neal powers Broncos softball past Brewer Wednesday night at Coffin Field

Two offensive teams battle to a 13-12 boys lacrosse match
BREWER – The Brewer boys lacrosse team hosted cross town rival Bangor in their second matchup of the season. It was a hard fought back and forth battle that in the end was won by Brewer 13-12.

Brewer 5/6B girls cruise past Bucksport for EMBL Championship
BREWER - The Brewer and Bucksport 5-6B girls opened Championship Sunday at Brewer High School Sunday morning, and it was the Witches who cruised to a 39-17 victory to claim the 2021-22 Eastern Maine Basketball League girls 5-6B Division Championship.

Brewer eliminates Hermon in JV PVC/Big East Hoops Tourney
BREWER – The #4 Brewer JV boys defeated visiting #5 Hermon in a a game that was part of the PVC/Big East JV Boys Championship Tournament with a 44-20 score.

Brewer opened the game with an 8-0 run and went on to a 10-4 first quarter lead. The second quarter was a little closer with brewer outscoring the Hawks 8-6 to take an 18-10 lead into the halftime.
The third quarter was all Brewer as they blew the game open outscoring Hermon 12-5 to build a 15 point lead 30-15 heading into the final quarter. The fourth was another Brewer quarter finishing up with 14-5 quarter to seal the game and move on as they try to advance to the championship game.
Scoring for Brewer were, Braden Carr with a game high 12 points; Cayen Philbrick 10; Steven Young eight; Charlie Brydges seven; Kyle Horr three; and Jake Perry and Aiden Davis two each.
The Witches were 8-of-13 (62 percent) from the foul line, and they knocked down four 3-pointers, two from Carr, and one each from, Horr, and Brydges.
For Hermon, (First names were not provided), N. Dupuy and Z. Allen had six points each; G. Scripture M. Henderson, D. Fowler, and C. Brocates added two each.
Hermon was 1-of-2 (50 percent) from the foul line and they had three long distance baskets, two from Depuy and one from Allen.

Brewer girls rally in the fourth to overcome the Windjammers
BREWER – The Brewer girls varsity team hosted Camden Hills of Rockport Tuesday evening and were faced with a hard battle that took an excellent fourth quarter to capture the 61-50 win.

Johnson, Leavitt lead Camden Hills JV Girls over Brewer

Lady Broncos go long distance to breeze past Brewer
BREWER - Tuesday night at Brewer High School, the Lady Broncos of Hampden Academy came to town not having played a game since Jan. 8, but displayed very little rust from the time off as they breezed past the Brewer Witches 53-27 knocking down 12 long range shots along the way.

Hampden started the game a little slow scoring just eight points, but the defensive allowed just three Brewer points in the first period.
The Broncos picked it up in the second quarter knocking down five 3-point baskets and a field goal to out score Brewer 17-6 to take a 25-9 lead into the half time break.
Again, the Broncos stumbled just a bit scoring only eight points in the third period but held the Witches to seven points giving Hampden a 33-16 lead moving to the final stanza.
In the final period, won by Hampden 20-11, the Broncos had three baskets from behind the arc, but they went 11-for-15 from the foul line in the quarter. Cam Neal and Lucy Wiles combined to go 9-for-11 from the line in the quarter.
This was also the first game back since Dec. 23 for Hampden senior guard, Camryn Neal. She hurt her knee in a game against Oxford Hills. Neal told me after the game, in which she played many minutes she was a little tired but the knee felt good. Good news for the Broncos with their high scorer out, Bella McLaughlin, and freshman guard Caitlyn Murphy.
Scoring in double digits for Hampden was Emma Haskell and Taylor Gardner with a game high 12 points and Neal with 10 points. Lauren Voteur added nine points and Wiles had six points. Sadie Campbell had three points, and Josie Smith chipped in with one point.
The Broncos had 12 baskets from behind the arc, four each by Haskell and Gardner, two from Voteur, and one each by Neal and Campbell. They shot 15-for-23 (65 percent) from the charity stripe.
Riley Umel topped Brewer in scoring with nine points, while Makayla Dore and Kelly DiCarlo each scored six points. Trea Broussard, Mariah Roberts, and Jenna McQuarrie scored two points each.
The Witches had no long range baskets, and they shot 15-of-21 (71 percent) from the free throw line.
With the win Hampden goes to 8-2 on the season. Next up for Hampden Academy is Cheverus tomorrow, Jan. 26 in Portland.
For Brewer, they fall to 4-9 and will travel to Fairfield to take on Lawrence Friday, Jan. 28.

Brewer varsity doubles up Messalonskee
BREWER – The Brewer boys varsity team got off to a very slow start Saturday afternoon, but come the second quarter they were back, and there was no stopping them as they went on to defeat the visiting Eagles of Messalonskee 82-40.

After a tough first quarter that saw the Witches struggle just to find the basket. It didn't matter until late in the quarter when Brewer finally started to find their way and took a slim 14-12 first quarter lead. The second quarter was all Witches as they outscored the Eagles 22-9 to take a 36-21 lead into the halftime break.
The second half was more of the same for Brewer. Outscoring Messalonskee 23-12 in the third to extend their lead to 59-33. The Witches coasted through the final stanza again outscoring the Eagles 23-7 for the win.
The fact that after the first quarter the sky started raining 3-pointers for the Witches, 11 of them in fact.
Scoring for Brewer were, Brady Saunders with a game high 18 points; Brock Flagg 13; Aaron Newcomb 12; Evan nadeau nine; Colby Smith eight; Ryder Goodwin and Cameron Hughes six each; Kyle Horr and Branden Carr three each; and Aiden Davis and Titus Philbrick two each.
Brewer was 13-of-15 (87 percent) from the foul line and as mentioned had 11 3-pointers, four from Saunders, two from, Nadeau, Smith, and Newcomb while Horr added one.
For Messalonskee, Daniel Parent and 12 points; Aiden Doran, Sam Dube, and Merrick Smith six each; Walter Fegel and Jacob Love three each; and Brayden Mayo and Drake Brunelle two each.
The Eagles were 4-of-9 (44 percent) from behind the charity stripe. They knocked down six 3-pointers, four from Parent; and one each from, Fegel and Love.
Brewer goes to 10-1 with the win while Messalonskee falls to 0-11.
The Witches will be back home again on Monday, Jan. 24 in a makeup game against Lawrence.

Nokomis JV girls slip past Brewer with a 46-42 win

Flagg leads Witches to win over Nokomis
BREWER – The Brewer girls hosted Nokomis Thursday night in JV and varsity action. Freshman Allie Flagg scored the first four points of the game and went on to score a team high 14 points in the 52-42 win.

Ford sparks Holbrook to win over Brewer 7/8 A girls
The Holbrook 7/8 A girls battled back from a 3-point half time deficit to pull out a 36-34 win over the host team Brewer on Sunday morning at Brewer High School in an Eastern Maine Basketball League travel contest.

Brewer squeezes out single point victory over Broncos
Sunday morning at Brewer High School, the Brewer 5/6B boys battled with the Hampden Broncos for two halves and came away with a very slim 38-37 victory as Brody Flagg and Luke Stuber scored double digit points to lead the Witches in an Eastern Maine Basketball League travel ball game.

Reeds Brook 7/8 girls' hold off Brewer for an exciting win (VIDEO ADDED)
BREWER – The Brewer Community School girls "A" team hosted Reeds Brook of Hampden to an Eastern Maine Middle School League game. This was an exciting game as it looked early like this was going to be a blowout that soon turned into a back and forth game with Reeds Brook coming out on top 38-35.

Witches no match for Hermon JV girls
Thursday night at Brewer High School, the Hermon JV girls out scored the Witches 32-11 in the first and fourth quarters to take a 41-29 victory back home as Rachel Wickett led the way for the Hawks with a game high 13 points.

Brewer boys JV breezes past Hawks for win
BREWER - The Brewer JV boys took a 18-8 half time lead into the third quarter and turned up the heat with a 27-0 period to put the game away over the Hermon Hawks 52-19 at Brewer High School Thursday night. The Witches knocked down five 3-point baskets in the third period.

Brewer boys remain undefeated with win over Mt. Blue (UPDATED with more STATS)
BREWER – The Brewer boys basketball program showed today why they are in first place in the Heal Point standings in Class A North. Even when the game does not go as they would like, the Witches continue doing the basics and escape a second half shooing shortcoming for the 79-66 win.
