Visiting Windjammer girls slip past Hampden

A scene from the Windjammers 7-8th grade B girls at Hampden 7-8th B at Reeds Brook School in Hampden. The Windjammers won the game 35-31. (Photo by Ron Hawkes)

Travel basketball with 7-8th grade girls B teams from Camden-Rockport, the Windjammers, and the host Hampden Broncos.

Click Here to view the photo gallery from this game.

An exciting game between two very competitive teams. The Windjammers led after the first quarter 10-9 but fell behind Hampden 15-14 at the half.  The Windjammers built a little lead in the third quarter as they outscored Hampden 10-6, fueled by a pair of back-to-back 3-pointers from Camden's Natalia Davis. That lead was enough to hold off the Broncos as the Windjammers outscored Hampden 11-10 in the final stanza for the 35-31 win.

Scoring for the Windjammers was Davis with a team-high 13 points,  including two 3-pointers. Also scoring for the Windjammers was Esma Tobiasz with six points, Liv Domareki and Maggie Harbaugh with four each, and Julia Hart and Baya Healey with two each. The Windjammers were 1-of-6 from the foul line.

For Hampden, Rivers Bradford had a game-high 16 points, Avery Light and Ahlyza Dunham with five each, Mia Reid and Kenzie Stone with two points each, and Sophia Lord with one point. The Broncos were 7-of-18 from the charity stripe.

Glenburn travel 7-8th grade downs Orrington

Scene from the Orrington at Glenburn 7-8th Boys Basketball game. (Photo by Ron Hawkes)

The second game for the day at Glenburn School featured the 7-8th grade boys from Orrington visiting the Glenburn Travel Team.
Glenburn came away with the 55-36 win.

Click Here to view a photo gallery from this game.

This game like the previous lacked accurate scorebook and names. Here is the best I can figure out. All information is taken from the scorebooks available.

For Glenburn, Griffin Dunton led the scoring 23 points including a 3-pointer. Zach #13 had 12 points, Caleb #14 added 11 points, #23 had five points, and #11 and #12 had two points each.

For the Orrington Rec, #4 led the team with 16 points, #5 added 11, #10 four, #3 three, and #13 two points each.

The Orrington team knocked down seven 3-point shots in the game.

Youth Basketball in full swing

The Eastern Maine Basketball League is underway with grades 3-4, 5-6, and 7-8 boys and girls.

Games are played at various gyms across the area on Saturdays and Sundays.

The first game today was the 5th & 6th grade boys from Glenburn hosting the Old Town Rec 5th & 6th boys.

Click Here to view a photo gallery from this game.

It was a very close game all the way with Glenburn coming back to tie the score at 50-50 to end the fourth quarter. The overtime is four minutes and Glenburn was able to hold off the Old Town boys outscoring them 9-5 to capture the 59-55 win.

Getting the names of players in a scorebook is almost always a problem so if I have them I will use them. If not I will use the players' numbers. All information is taken from the team's scorebook or league scorebook if available.

For Glenburn, I have some first names and uniform numbers. The top scorer was, #22-Jace, with 33 points, followed by Brod #24 with 20 points including three three pointers. #31 Eli and #21 Agaba three points each.

For Old Town, it looks like the numbers do not match up so I have Carter Cox, with a team-high 17 points, and Mason Frost with 11. Other player numbers do not total what should be the score.

The full schedule for the league can be seen here.

The five classes of girls' soccer are ready to compete in the final game of the season.

Madison of the 8-person league scored the most goals of any team, boys' or girls' this season, with 101. The defense of Penquis, also in the 8 person league, was the stingiest, only allowing three goals all season.

Here is how, when, and where they match up.

Class A:
N#1 Bangor will battle S#1 Scarborough at 10 a.m. at Messalonskee High School. Bangor went 13-1 on the season and they outscored their opponents 68-10. Scarborough was also 13-1 and they outscored their opponents 51-6.

Class B:
N#3 Ellsworth will taken on S#1 Yarmouth at 3 p.m. at Mt. Ararat High School.  Ellsworth went 11-2-1 this season and they outscored their opponents 55-15.
Yarmouth went 12-1-1 and they outscored their opponents 32-6.

Class C:
N#1 Fort Kent is ready to do battle with S#3 Waynflete at 10 a.m. at Mt. Ararat High School. Fort Kent went 13-1 on the season and outscored their opponents 65-4. Waynflete went 9-5 and outscored their opponents 43-17.

Class D:
N#1 Penobscot Valley will take on S#1 Saint Dominic at 3 p.m. at Messalonskee High School. Penobscot Valley went 14-0 on the season and they outscored their opponents 91-6 while St. Dominics went 10-3-1 while outscoring their opponents 28-12.

8 Person League:
N#1 Penquis Valley will compete against S#1 Madison at 4 p.m. at Cony High School. Penquis Valley went 14-0 and scored 69 goals while holding their opponents to a mere 3 points. Madison went 12-2 and scored a girl's team's highest goal with 101 while allowing just 16 to the opponents.

Boys Soccer State Championship Playoff Saturday

The boy's teams are set and ready to go tomorrow as each division plays for the state championship gold ball.

The combined teams in the tournament went 118-13-9 in the regular season. The 10 teams scored 604 points while giving up just 110. The highest-scoring teams were Schenck/Stearns and Carribec with 85 points scored each. Both of those teams play in the 8-person league. In the full 11-man team Eastern had the most with 71 points.
Class C Mt. Abram gave up the fewest goals, 2.

CLASS A:
N# 1 Lewiston will take on S#3 Derring at Messalonskee High School at 12:30 p.m.
Lewiston went 11-2-1 on the season and outscored their opponents 52-15. Derring went 9-3-2 and outscored their opponents 52-20.

CLASS B:
N# 1 John Bapst
will take on S#1 Yarmouth at Mt. Ararat at 5:30 p.m. John Bapst went 12-1-1 on the season and outscored their opponents 57-16.
S#1 Yarmouth went 12-2-0 and outscored their opponents 48-11.

CLASS C:
S#1 Mt. Abram
will battle N#4 George Sevens Academy at 12:30 p.m. at Mt. Ararat. Mt. Abram went 14-0 on the season and outscored their opponents 69-2. George Stevens went 10-2-2 and outscored their opponents 54-10.

CLASS D:
N#1 Easton
11-1-2 will take on S#2 Monmouth Academy 12-1-1, at 5:30 p.m. at Messalonskee High School. Eastern outscored their opponents 71-11, while Monmouth held a 51-9 advantage in the scoring department.

8-Person:
S#1 Carrabec
14-0-0 will take on N#1 Schenck/Stearns 13-1-0 at 6 p.m. at Cony High School Carrabec outscored their opponents 85-5, while Schenck/Stearns held the edge over their opponents at 85-11.

These should be some exciting games as all the teams were high-scoring while not giving up many goals. These games turn out to be defensive gems if they can keep the other team out of the goal.

Snyder puts Windjammers over the top

2023 Camden Hills Soccer Team. (Photo by Ron Hawkes)

The Camden Hills Windjammers girls' soccer team worked hard to overcome Brunswick in a 2-1 win at Fuller Field in Augusta on Saturday afternoon.

Here is a link to a photo gallery from this game.

After a scoreless first half, the Dragons put up the first score on a corner kick from Hazel Bachman to give the Dragons a short-time lead. Camden Hills Lea Zwecker took a beautiful pass into the box from Britta Denny and nailed a sweet shot at 35:25 to tie the game up and give Camden some momentum.

Almost 20 minutes later Denny again found a wide-open Leah Snyder cutting through the box hitting her with a perfect pass that Snyder could put in the opposite corner of the goal at 15:46 to give the Windjammers the lead they would not give up.

Both of these teams fought right to the end, a well played match that saw the athletes leave it all on the pitch.

This was a big win for Camden Hills who lost last year in the semifinal 1-0 to Brunswick.

NO. 2 Camden Hills will now face NO. 1 Bangor on Tuesday, Nov. 8, at 4 p.m. at Lewiston High School for the Northern  Class A Championship.
