Brewer boys remain undefeated with win over Mt. Blue (UPDATED with more STATS)

BREWER – The Brewer boys basketball program showed today why they are in first place in the Heal Point standings in Class A North. Even when the game does not go as they would like, the Witches continue doing the basics and escape a second half shooing shortcoming for the 79-66 win.

Brewer moves to 8-0 with the win while Mt. Blue falls to 4-5 on the season at the half way point.

The Witches got off to a very good first half as Aaron Newcomb started the scoring with a 3-pointer from the right corner and the game continued the same as Brewer outscored the Cougars 23-13 after starting the game with a 10-0 run.

After two quarters where Brewer again scored 23 while holding Mt. Blue to 16 for the 46-29 Brewer halftime lead. The final three came off a 3/4 court shot by Evan Glass at the buzzer.

The second half saw the Brewer Witches being outscored in the third and final quarters as their shooting went cold for them as they scored 15 in the third quarter while Mt. Blue tallied 17 to make it a 61-46 game heading into the final stanza.

Mt. Blue had it's best quarter of the day as they again outscored Brewer 20-18 to make it a 79-66 final.

Between the two teams there were 17 3-point baskets made with Brewer making 12 and Mt. Blue five.

The Cougars missed Chandler Briggs big time in this game as he was able to play. He played big against Brewer in a preseason game.

Scoring for Brewer was, Brock Flagg with a team high 19 points, (9 rebounds, 2 assist, 3 turn over, 2 steals); Brady Saunders (1 assist, 2 TO) and Ryder Goodwin (8 reb. 5 TO) had 17 each; Newcomb nine (1 TO); Evan Nadeau (2 reb. 1 assist, 1 TO) and Colby Smith(8 reb. 9 assists, 3 TO 3 steals) seven each; and Glass (2 reb 1 assist) three.

Brewer was 13-20 (65 percent) from the foul line and they knocked down an amazing 12 3-pointers with, five from Fluff, three from Saunders, two from Newcomb, and one each from Nadeau and Glass.

For Mt. Blue, Evans Sterling had a game high 20 points; Zach Poisson 15; Jayden Meader 10; Justin Dill eight; Charles Stevens six; and Zak Koban two.

The Cougars were 4-of-11 (36 percent) from the charity stripe. They had five 3-pointers, three from Poisson, and two from Dill.

Three players talents really stood out in this game. Brewer's Evan Nadeau is a royal pain to whoever he is assigned to guard. He is fast, and quick, great eyes and looks to know the defensive game very well while contributing on offense. Second is  Brewer's Colby Smith. I have never seen a point guard in high school with the passing skills he has creating so many scoring opportunities for his teammates. If Smith sees you open, you will likely get the ball. So many passes into the paint to Saunders and Goodwin for easy layups.

Over on Mt. Blue was sophomore Evans Sterling, a guard that can dribble drive, pass, shoot, and play solid defense. This young man should be fun to keep your eyes on the next couple of years.

Brewer will host Erskine who is currently 0-8 on Tuesday, Jan. 11 at 6:30 p.m. Mt. Blue will travel the same day to Oakland to take on Lawrence.
