Hermon softball knocks off Ellsworth advances to the regional finals

 ELLSWORTH – The #6 Hermon Hawks softball team being on a roll is putting it mildly. On Friday, they eliminated #3 MDI in extra innings, and turned around Saturday and knocked off #2 Ellsworth 4-3.

No. 6 Hermon softball eliminates #11 Oceanside in Round of 16

Hermon –The Hermon girls relied on their pitching and solid defense to take a lead and hold it, giving up just one run in the top of the seventh as the Hawks take a 4-1 win over the Mariners of Rockland.

Hampden doubles up Lewiston to advance to Portland

 HAMPDEN – The #3 ranked Hampden Broncos girls basketball team hosted #6 Lewiston, a team with three starters at home with the flu, Thursday evening in a quarterfinal Class AA playoff.

The Broncos had some struggles getting back in touch with everyone as this was the first game Hampden has had since Dec. 22 with the original starting five all available. But even the rust was not going to deter the Broncos as they went on to a 40-20 win. 

The Bronco's outscored the Blue Devils each of the first three quarters, 11-6, 9-4, and put the game out of reach for Lewiston in the third outscoring them 13-2. Lewiston managed to gain the advantage in the final quarter 8-7.

The win means that Hampden will play in the semifinal game on Wednesday at the Cross Center in Portland. They will play the winner of the Portland and Cheverus game. 

Scoring for Hampden was Bella McLaughlin with a game high 12 points; Cam Neal 11; Lauren Voteur eight; Taylor Gardner five; and Lucy Wiles four. 

The Broncos were 8-of-10 (80 percent) from behind the charity stripe and they knocked down two 3-pointers, one each from Gardner and Neal.

For Lewiston, Aiwen Maiwen lad the team with seven points; Koral Morin six; Skyler Gaudette three, and Maddy Oliveira, and Kaura Lawrence two each.

The Blue Devils were just 1-of-5 (20 percent) from the foul line. They had three 3-point baskets, two from Morin and one from Gaudette!

Caron, explosive overtime lead to Hermon win over John Bapst

BANGOR – The Cross Insurance Center was buzzing with excitement on one side of the court and silence on the other as No. 9 John Bapst Crusaders had a 3 point lead on the No. 1 Hermon Hawks with the clock down to 2.4 seconds in regulation of this Class B quarterfinal.

Chargers upset Wagner in middle school girls "B" semifinal

GLENBURN - The last time the Samuel L. Wagner and Glenburn "B" level girls faced each other on the court in Glenburn it reulted in an 11-point victory for the Clippers back on January 22. Tuesday might was a different story with a different atmosphere. The No. 3 Chargers, led by double digit scoring from Andrea Crocker, held off a fourth quarter Wagner rally to come away with a 32-28 semifinal victory over the No. 2 seed Clippers at the Glenburn School. Glenburn advances to the Penobscot Valley Middle League championship scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Thursday, February 6 at Center Drive School in Orrington.

Oceanside Little League to host complete District 2 Little League playoffs

ROCKLAND – The Oceanside Little League has released the exhibition and playoff schedule of the District 2 playoffs. This year all the games will be played at the fields in Rockland, Gordon and George Hall and at the Thomaston field.

WS Emerson gets semifinal walk off win

HAMPDEN - Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning, No. 2 seed W.S. Emerson picked up a walk off 5-4 win over No. 3 seed Anglers in a Bronco Little League Majors baseball semifinal playoff game at the VFW field in Hampden Saturday afternoon.

With the win, Emerson improves to 12-2 on the season while Anglers concludes their season at 9-7.

Anglers gain quarterfinal victory in Bronco Little League Baseball playoffs

HAMPDEN - Tuesday evening at the VFW Field in Hampden, the Anglers and Wellman Paving teams scored a combined 34 runs as Anglers picked up the Mercy Rule win with a 22-12 score in five innings.

No. 3 Anglers improves to 9-6 on the season with the win, while No. 6 Wellman Paving concludes their season with a 2-13 record.
