Wells girls win first state championship in OT over Hermon

BANGOR – The Wells girls put on a defensive show the whole game as they limited Hermon to 35 percent shooting in the first half, falling too much worse in the second half and overtime where they went 2-19 from the floor. In the end, Wells pulled out a 34-26 victory.

OTO hockey eliminates Brewer in quarterfinal action

ORONO – The No. 2 Old Town/Orono hockey team skated to a 3-0 win over No. 7 Brewer Tuesday night at the Alfond Arena at the University of Maine to advance to the semifinal games.

Orono Unified basketball victorious over Lynx

ORONO - Tuesday afternoon the Orono Red Riots Unified basketball team hosted Mattanawcook Academy in the first of three consecutive days of games on the schedule, and it was Orono with a big second half who came away with a 77-71 victory over the Lynx.

Gardiner goes 5-0 in 3rd-4th grade Glenburn tournament for Championship victory

GLENBURN - Late Sunday afternoon, Gardiner and Bangor hit the hardwood for the Glenburn Rec 3rd/4th grade tournament championship game with both teams holding on to a 4-0 record. Gardiner had the stronger team for this match up, and came away with a 21-14 victory to claim the 2020 Championship.

Bronco Travel Basketball Club handles four tournaments in one

HAMPDEN – The Bronco Travel Basketball Club (BTBC) held tournaments this Saturday and Sunday for 5th & 6th grade and 7th & 8th-grade girls. Last weekend was the boys.

Wild start to Glenburn Rec 3/4 girls tournament

GLENBURN - Saturday morning, with a packed gymnasium, the Glenburn Rec opened their 3rd-4th grade girls basketball tournament to a wild start for the week-end. The first two games of the day went to overtime,game one was decided by sudden death in the third overtime and game two was won in the first overtime period.

Top seed Hermon girls hold off Old Town to advance to regional final

BANGOR - Three starters scored in double figures Wednesday afternoon, led by 13 points each from Paige Plissey and Megan Tracy, to lead the No. 1 Hermon Hawks to a 47-34 Maine Principals’ Association Class B semifinal girls basketball win over No. 4 Old Town at the Cross Insurance Center.

Lawrence 5/6 girls squeeze out Glenburn Rec tournament Championship

GLENBURN - Sunday afternoon at the Glenburn School, the Lawrence Bulldogs 5/6 girls nearly gave the game away during the fourth quarter, but they managed to hold on long enough to pull out a 38-32 win over Old Town Y to claim the Glenburn Rec 5th/6th grade girls tournament championship.

Sunday afternoon at the Glenburn School, the Old Town Y girls defeated Presque Isle 23-20 and Lawrence needed overtime to come away with a 35-31 victory over Bangor in the Glenburn Rec's 5th/6th grade basketball tournament semifinal games.

Broncos hang on for win over an aggressive Mt. Blue

AUGUSTA – When this game started not one person I had talked to expected to witness the game No. 8 Mt. Blue came to play against the No. 1 seeded Hampden Broncos. Not only did the Broncos have nothing to lose in this matchup, but they also played like they were going to win.

No. 5 Brewer takes down No. 4 Messalonskee to advance to semifinal

AUGUSTA – The Brewer boys basketball team made the trip to the Augusta Civic Center Saturday night to take on Messalonskee of Oakland in a quarterfinal matchup that was Brewer's game all the way to the 63-47 win.

Coyotes eliminate No. 4 Hermon with quarterfinal win

BANGOR – The No. 4 Hermon Hawks hosted the 12th seeded Old Town Coyotes at the Cross Insurance Center Saturday, Feb. 15, falling 47-42 in a Class B North quarterfinal matchup.

Caron, explosive overtime lead to Hermon win over John Bapst

BANGOR – The Cross Insurance Center was buzzing with excitement on one side of the court and silence on the other as No. 9 John Bapst Crusaders had a 3 point lead on the No. 1 Hermon Hawks with the clock down to 2.4 seconds in regulation of this Class B quarterfinal.

Glenburn Rec kicks off first of four tournament weekends with 5/6 girls tourney

GLENBURN - Saturday morning the Glenburn Rec kicked off their annual tournaments with a 5th/6th grade girls tournament. The tournament consists of Pool Play on Saturday with each team playing two games, plus one additional Pool Play game on Sunday morning. The tournament concludes Sunday afternoon with two single elimination games followed by the Championship game.

Teams competing this opening weekend are Bangor, Presque Isle, Lincoln, host team Glenburn, Lawrence, Dexter, Foxcroft, and Old Town Y.

In the first four games of the day, Bangor defeated Lincoln 26-21, Lawrence rolled over Dexter 43-21, Presque Isle dominated Glenburn with a 33-7 win, and Old Town Y cruised to a 38-18 win over Foxcroft.

In the first game of the day, Bangor needed all four quarters to pull out a 26-21 win over Lincoln. The game was tied 17-17 after three quarters, but Bangor out scored Lincoln 9-4 in the final period for the win.

Avery Clark scored a game high 17 points to lead Bangor, and Gabby Roy had five points. Julianna Cloukey and Addison Cyr each scored eight points to top Lincoln in scoring.

After a 10-4 first quarter, Lawrence doubled up Dexter 12-6 in the second period to take a 22-10 lead into the half time break. The Bulldogs out scored Dexter 13-2 in the third quarter to put the game away with a 35-12 lead on their way to a 43-21 victory.

Ashley Shores scored a game high 17 points, Payton Cole added eight points, and Kayci Ross scored six to lead Lawrence in scoring. Kellie Stone scored eight points and Annabelle Peakes had six points to pace Dexter in scoring.

In a major size difference, Presque Isle dominated Glenburn after a 10-0 first quarter holding the Chargers to single digits over the final three quarters for a 33-7 win.

Rhianna Desjardins led all scorers with 10 points and Maddy Putnam added seven points to lead Presque Isle in scoring.

Eve Wiles, Grace LaBree, and Kaylee Folsom each scored two points and Mallory Lausier added one point to provide the scoring for Glenburn.

Old Town managed just a one point lead (6-5) after the first quarter, but out scored Foxcroft 11-5 in the second period for a 17-10 half time lead. Old Town out scored Foxcroft 21-8 over the second half to pull off the 20 point 38-18 win.

Old Town was led in scoring by Karly Buckwalter with 11 points, Konna Dumond with 10 points, and Taylor Loring with nine points.

Providing the scoring for Foxcroft was Addie Day with 11 points, Alli Cook with six points, and Alexis Burdin with one point.

All teams return on Sunday with games beginning at 9:00 a.m.

Brewer hockey with huge win over Camden Hills

BREWER – The Brewer hockey team hosted Camden Hills of Rockport this afternoon at the Penobscot Ice Arena where they pulled off the huge win over the third-place Windjammers by the score of 4-2.

Chargers upset Wagner in middle school girls "B" semifinal

GLENBURN - The last time the Samuel L. Wagner and Glenburn "B" level girls faced each other on the court in Glenburn it reulted in an 11-point victory for the Clippers back on January 22. Tuesday might was a different story with a different atmosphere. The No. 3 Chargers, led by double digit scoring from Andrea Crocker, held off a fourth quarter Wagner rally to come away with a 32-28 semifinal victory over the No. 2 seed Clippers at the Glenburn School. Glenburn advances to the Penobscot Valley Middle League championship scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Thursday, February 6 at Center Drive School in Orrington.

Brewer boys down Erskine by 30-point margin

BREWER – The Brewer boys varsity traveled to So. China Monday to take on Erskine Academy and they played, they scored, a lot, and won the game 70-40 so they were able to enjoy the bus ride home.

Hermon boys offensive struggles gives Ellsworth low scoring win

HERMON – While the offense of the Hermon varsity boys basketball team may be struggling, they were not at all in that shape defensively as they held Ellsworth to their fourth lowest-scoring game in the 17 they have played this year in a 44-29 loss.

Hermon pulls away in second half to win EMBL 5/6 B girls Championship

BREWER - Saturday morning at Brewer High School, the Hermon and Glenburn 5th/6th grade girls opened up the first of nine games for the Eastern Maine Basketball League on Championship Saturday. Hermon pulled away in the second half to pick up a 41-26 win over Glenburn to take home the 2019-20 5/6B Championship.
