Lady Broncos go long distance to breeze past Brewer

BREWER - Tuesday night at Brewer High School, the Lady Broncos of Hampden Academy came to town not having played a game since Jan. 8, but displayed very little rust from the time off as they breezed past the Brewer Witches 53-27 knocking down 12 long range shots along the way.

Hampden started the game a little slow scoring just eight points, but the defensive allowed just three Brewer points in the first period.

The Broncos picked it up in the second quarter knocking down five 3-point baskets and a field goal to out score Brewer 17-6 to take a 25-9 lead into the half time break.

Again, the Broncos stumbled just a bit scoring only eight points in the third period but held the Witches to seven points giving Hampden a 33-16 lead moving to the final stanza.

In the final period, won by Hampden 20-11, the Broncos had three baskets from behind the arc, but they went 11-for-15 from the foul line in the quarter. Cam Neal and Lucy Wiles combined to go 9-for-11 from the line in the quarter.

This was also the first game back since Dec. 23 for Hampden senior guard, Camryn Neal. She hurt her knee in a game against Oxford Hills. Neal told me after the game, in which she played many minutes she was a little tired but the knee felt good. Good news for the Broncos with their high scorer out, Bella McLaughlin, and freshman guard Caitlyn Murphy.

Scoring in double digits for Hampden was Emma Haskell and Taylor Gardner with a game high 12 points and Neal with 10 points. Lauren Voteur added nine points and Wiles had six points. Sadie Campbell had three points, and Josie Smith chipped in with one point.

The Broncos had 12 baskets from behind the arc, four each by Haskell and Gardner, two from Voteur, and one each by Neal and Campbell. They shot 15-for-23 (65 percent) from the charity stripe.

Riley Umel topped Brewer in scoring with nine points, while Makayla Dore and Kelly DiCarlo each scored six points. Trea Broussard, Mariah Roberts, and Jenna McQuarrie scored two points each.

The Witches had no long range baskets, and they shot 15-of-21 (71 percent) from the free throw line.

With the win Hampden goes to 8-2 on the season. Next up for Hampden Academy is Cheverus tomorrow, Jan. 26 in Portland.

For Brewer, they fall to 4-9 and will travel to Fairfield to take on Lawrence Friday, Jan. 28.
