Caron, explosive overtime lead to Hermon win over John Bapst

BANGOR – The Cross Insurance Center was buzzing with excitement on one side of the court and silence on the other as No. 9 John Bapst Crusaders had a 3 point lead on the No. 1 Hermon Hawks with the clock down to 2.4 seconds in regulation of this Class B quarterfinal.

Sometimes heroes don't wear capes, they just calmly get set, take the shot and hit nothing but net to put the game into overtime tied at 34-34. Caron kept the fire burning scoring four more points in the overtime to pace the 8-0 run giving the Hawks the 42-34 win to advance to the semifinal.

With just 20.8 seconds left in overtime, Paige Plissey nailed a pair of free throws making it 41-34 and a three-possession lead for the Hawks.

Grace Page may have played a career game on both sides of the ball. She was intense on defense and led the team in scoring with some outstanding moves in the paint to outplay the taller Bapst defenders.

Scoring for Hermon was, Page with a game-high 14 points; Caron and Megan Tracy eight each; Maddie Lebel six; Plissey three; Sydney Gallop two and Allie Cameron one.

The Hawks were 19-of-29 (66 percent) from the foul line. They had just the one 3-pointer, probably the most important three of the season for the Hawks, from Caron.

For John Bapst, who played their hearts out trying to capture this game, Lacy Scanlon led the Crusaders with 10 points; Jamie McQuarrie nine; Jamey Satterfield five; Savannah Libby and Jayda Smith three each; and Sydney Ellis and Emily Mock two each.

The Crusaders were 7-of-13 (54 percent) from the charity stripe and they knocked down seven 3-pointers, three from McQuarrie, two from Scanlon, and one each from Satterfield and Libby.

Hermon will play No. 4 Old Town, who knocked off No. 5 Houlton Saturday in the regional semifinal. The game will be Wednesday, Feb. 19, at 3:30 p.m. at the Cross Insurance Center.
