Chargers upset Wagner in middle school girls "B" semifinal

GLENBURN - The last time the Samuel L. Wagner and Glenburn "B" level girls faced each other on the court in Glenburn it reulted in an 11-point victory for the Clippers back on January 22. Tuesday might was a different story with a different atmosphere. The No. 3 Chargers, led by double digit scoring from Andrea Crocker, held off a fourth quarter Wagner rally to come away with a 32-28 semifinal victory over the No. 2 seed Clippers at the Glenburn School. Glenburn advances to the Penobscot Valley Middle League championship scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Thursday, February 6 at Center Drive School in Orrington.

Scoring was at a minimum during the opening quarter, as both teams had just four points at the buzzer. The Chargers were able to break open the game in the second period out scoring Wagner 13-6 to take a 17-10 lead into half time.

Both teams managed just six points in the third period, and Glenburn was able to take a 23-16 lead into the final stanza. Wagner's Blayne Tardif left the game early in the third period with an injury, and she did not return to the game.

Crocker scored six quick points in the fourth quarter to push the Chargers lead to 29-18 with 5:30 left in the game. The Clippers were not done yet, as they ran off eight unanswered points to pull within three points of Glenburn 29-26 with 3:55 left in the game. Glenburn was able to fend off the Clippers the rest of the way to pick up the 4-point win.

Crocker topped all scorers with a game high 13 points, including 5-of-6 from the foul line. Grace LaBree added nine points for the Chargers, Jillian Severance had six points, and Hailey Campbell had four points. Glenburn went 6-for-9 (67 percent) from the free throw line.

Tardif, Mia Curtis, and MaKayla Shaw each scored six points to lead Wagner in scoring. Brooke Berry, Addison Elliot, and Jada Bilodeau each added four points. The Clippers went 2-for-8 (25 percent) from the charity stripe.
