Brewer ends regular season with win over Skowhegan

BREWER – The Brewer varsity boys took on Skowhegan Tuesday evening in the regular-season finale and captured the win 38-34.

That win put the Witches at 12-6 on the season and currently in fifth place in the Maine Principles' Association Heal Point Standings. Medomak Valley is a mere 1.7933 points ahead of Brewer in fourth place. They have one game left. If they win, Messalonskee and Medomak would switch places. Either way at this point it looks like Brewer will be playing either Medomak or Messalonskee in the opening round of the tournament. Hampden Academy has No 1 locked up and Cony is No. 2.

On Tuesday the Witches started strong, however, the shooting went cold and they were fortunate to hold on for the win. Brewer opened the game with a 14-5 first-quarter score. Skowhegan came back in the second quarter and outscored the Witches 13-5 cutting the Brewer lead at halftime to 19-18.
The shooting woes continued for Brewer in the third quarter, but also for Skowhegan as the Witches took a 27-25 lead into the final stanza. In the final eight minutes the Witches started to get their shooting touch back and they played some strong defense to hold off Skowhegan for the 4-point win.

Senior Trevor Pearson led the scoring for Brewer with 13 points; Brady Saunders six; Kyle Goodrich, Aaron Newcomb, and Dylan Huff five each; and Colby Smith and Gavin Carr two each.

The Witches were 5-of-8 (63 percent) from the foul line and they knocked down five 3-point baskets, two from Saunders, and one each from Goodrich, Pearson, and Newcomb.

For Skowhegan, Levi Obert had nine points; Carter Hunt six; Adam Savage five; Kyle Lepage four; Marcus Hampton and Matush Prokop three each; and Jimmy Reed and Chase Carey two each.

Skowhegan was 5-of-6 (83 percent) from behind the foul line. They also sank five 3-pointers, two each from Hunt and Obert and one from Savage.

Medomak Valley and Messalonskee are scheduled to play Thursday, Feb. 6, however, the weather the next two days could prevent that from happening.

Brewer has a pre-tourney scrimmage set up for Monday, Feb. 10 at Washington Academy at 5:30 p.m.
