WS Emerson gets semifinal walk off win

HAMPDEN - Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning, No. 2 seed W.S. Emerson picked up a walk off 5-4 win over No. 3 seed Anglers in a Bronco Little League Majors baseball semifinal playoff game at the VFW field in Hampden Saturday afternoon.

With the win, Emerson improves to 12-2 on the season while Anglers concludes their season at 9-7.

Anglers opened the scoring in the first inning on a TJ Henaghan RBI single that plated TJ Llerena for the 1-0 lead.

Emerson took the lead in the bottom half of the second inning when Kade Bartlett slapped an RBI single, and Wyatt Newell sent the ball over the center field fence for a 2-run homer to give his team a 3-1 lead.

Mason Grund, who came on in the second inning for Emerson to replace injured starter Collin Peckham, and Anglers starter Llerena locked horns for the next two innings putting nothing but goose eggs on the score board.

Heading into the fifth inning, Emerson continued to hold a 3-1 lead, but Anglers put three runs on the board to take a 4-3 lead. Llerena had an RBI double in the inning, and Andy Henaghan added an RBI single.

Llerena shut down Emerson in the bottom of the fifth inning to keep the Anglers on top 4-3, but Emerson's Grund did the same in the top half of the sixth inning to keep it a one run game.

Emerson was not to be denied in their final at bat. Winners of eight straight games to close out the regular season, Emerson displayed a never give up attitude. Nick Bates tied the game at 4-4 with an RBI single, and Zach McGlaughlin ended the game with a walk off base hit to center field.

Emerson will play the winner of the No. 1 Dysarts vs No. 4 Forrest Auto Body game in the Bronco Little League Championship game at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 21.
