Hermon boys hold off a feisty Oceanside in preseason matchup

HERMON – The Hermon High School boys basketball team hosted a four-team tournament Saturday with the opener between Hermon and Oceanside of Rockland. The Hawks held onto the lead all the way but had to fight off a very determined Mariners team to capture the 52-44 win.

The other teams in the tournament were George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill and Nokomis of Newport.

Hermon took a 15-11 first-quarter lead and a 31-17 half time advantage. However, Oceanside came out strong in the second half and outscored Hermon in the third and fourth quarters13-10 and 14-11 before falling 52-44.

Scoring throughout the lineups was spread out with Oceanside having just three players that did not score and Hermon had just two.

Leading Hermon to the win wasJaeden Henderson with 10 points; Trey Brown nine; Isaac Varney Eight; Wyatt Gogan and Eli Reed five each; Xavier Jelks, Clark Pelletier, and Zach Tubbs four each; Isaac Parent two; and Jacob Davis one.

The Hawks were 10-of-19, (53 percent), from the foul line and they nailed five 3-pointers, three from Brown and one each from Pelletier and Reed.

For Oceanside, they were led offensively by Everett Spear with nine points; Nate Coombs and Drew Daggett eight each; Cameron Kingsbury seven; Elliot Lucier and Landdon Willis three each; and Hayden Jaques, Aiden Munro, and Gavyn Tower two each.

The Mariners were 2-of-5, (40 percent), from the foul line. They had two 3-pointers, one each from Kingsbury and Willis.
