Wickett, Bowden spark Lady Hawks to JV win over MDI

HERMON – Thursday afternoon at the Hawks Nest, the JV girls got the program off to a good start on the day as they defeated the Trojans of MDI 42-35 with a strong second half effort.

Hermon out scored MDI 14-12 in the opening period, but the Trojans battled back with an 11-8 score in the second quarter to give MDI a 23-22 advantage at the half time break. It was Bella Bowden who kept the Hawks close in the half, as she scored 10 points to lead Hermon.

The Hawks stepped it up in the third period outscoring MDI 11-5 to take a 33-28 lead into the final quarter. Hermon hung on with a 9-7 score to come away with the seven point advantage for the win. Rachel Wickett led the way for Hermon over the second half scoring seven points.

Bowden and Wickett each scored a team high 13 points to lead the Hawks in scoring for the game. Brooke Gallop added eight points, while Izzy Byram and Veronica Chichetto each scored four points.

Hermon had no long range baskets from behind the arc, and they went 10-for-23 (43 percent) from the free throw line.

Topping all scorers with 14 points was, Lexi Tozier leading MDI in scoring. Sophia Brophy added six points, mallory Dunbar and Sophia Thurston each had four points, and Emma Simard scored three. Mia Shaw and Lauren Davis each chipped in with two points a piece.

The Trojans had one 3-point basket by Dunbar, and they shot just 4-for-17 (23 percent) from behind the charity stripe.
