Witches get their revenge for an earlier loss to Lawrence

BREWER – Earlier in the season the Brewer coaches and players knew they should not have lost at Lawrence. Friday night while the Brewer varsity boys had the Bulldogs in the house they came out strong, stayed strong for 32 minutes and played like a well-oiled machine to claim the 57-46 win. It was the fifth win in a row.

With the win, Brewer goes to 10-5 on the season and has three games left in the regular season, two at home, Bangor and Skowhegan, and one on the road at Erskine Academy of So. China.

The Witches came out ready to play and with all five starters on the scoreboard, they took an 18-14 lead in what looked like it was going to be a tight game all the way. The Brewer boys had different plans though and came out in the second quarter applying some good pressure on the ball and boxing out taking over the boards from a team that had a lot of height on them.

With Brewer up by 11 at the halftime break, Coach Goodwin was shaking his head with a big smile on it. Imagine the reaction when at the end of three-quarters of play Brewer heal a 20-point, 47-27 advantage.

Brewer was led by Aaron Newcomb with 13 points; Trevor Pearson 12; Kyle Goodrich 10; Colby Smith and Dylan Huff seven each; and Ryder Goodwin and Gavin Carr four each.

In all, seven of the nine players on the Brewer team scored in this game. The balanced attack kept Lawrence off guard most of the night.

Brewer was 7-of-10 (70 percent) from the foul line and they nailed two 3-pointers, one each from Newcomb and Huff.

For Lawrence, Dylan Coombs and Nic Blaisdell had 13 points each; Dylan Martin-Hachey 12; Zack Nickerson six; and Mark Huard two.

The Bulldogs were 3-of-4 (75 percent) from the foul line and they knocked down five 3-pointers, three from Coombs and two from Martin-Hachey.

Brewer will host Bangor in a makeup game Monday, Jan. 27 at 6:30 p.m. That is a big game for the Witches, not just because of a long-time rivalry, but because a win for Brewer would mean some significant Heal Points in the standings.
