Hawks speed and athleticism propel 3/4 Parsons to big win over Foxcroft

HERMON - Prior to the start of the game, the talk along the sideline was how much bigger the boys from Foxcroft looked compared to the same aged players from Hermon. Once the game got underway at Pottle Field, on the campus of Hermon High School, the hometown boys answered all the size questions as the athleticism and speed of Hermon led the 3rd/4th grade Parsons Hawks to a 40-6 blow out victory over the Ponies from Foxcroft.

The win for Hermon was their fifth consecutive after dropping their first game of the season against Millinocket. The team's immense improvement in their game since game one has led to the win streak, and the coaches believe if they could play that first game over again today they would win.

In the opening quarter of Sunday's game, Foxcroft had first possession and they were shut down by the defense of the Hawks. When the ball turned over to Hermon on offense, the Hawks needed just one play from scrimmage to get on the scoreboard. Quarterback River Shields tossed a screen pass to Landon Kay who scampered down the left sideline some 60 yards for the touchdown with 6:01 left in the quarter. After Nathan Spencer crossed the goal line for the extra point, Hermon jumped on top 7-0.

The Hawks needed just 31 seconds into the second quarter to add to their lead. Colton Soucy took the hand off and ran 45 yards into the end zone to give Hermon a 13-0 lead.

Hermon added another score in the second quarter when Shields took the snap from center and rolled out to his left eventually landing in the end zone for the touchdown with 9:40 remaining in the first half. Soucy carried the ball across the goal line for the extra point, and the Hawks increased their lead to 20-0.

As the clock was clicking down the seconds towards the end of the half, Hermon had one more score in their plans. Chase Waite got the hand off from Shields and raced towards the sideline and into the end zone with 46.9 seconds left on the clock. The point after attempt was no good, and the Hawks went into the half time break with the game pretty much on ice at 26-0.

A scoreless third quarter would lead to three scores in the final period of play. Shields scored his second rushing touchdown with 9:34 left in the game, and Soucy added the extra point putting the Hawks on top 33-0.

A little over three minutes later the Ponies put a crooked number on the score board when Jacob Hack scored with 6:16 remaining. After a failed extra point, the score was 33-6.

Hermon added one more score to their game total, as Nathan Spencer punched the ball into the end zone with 21.1 seconds left in the game. Nicholas Lord added the extra point and the Hawks closed out the remainder of the game with a final score of 40-6.
