Glenburn upsets No. 1 Holbrook for EMBL semifinal victory

GLENBURN - For the second time in two weeks, the No. 5 Glenburn Chargers picked up a victory over a higher seed team (defeated No. 4 Brewer on January 18) to earn the right to head to Championship Saturday after a 44-37 win over No. 1 Holbrook in the Eastern Maine Basketball League 5/6B girls semifinal game.

Glenburn cruised through most of the game with no pressure, building up a pretty good size lead over the top seed Holbrook Red Devils. The Chargers led 30-17 at the half time break, and came out onj a 6-0 run to start the second half.

With 6:45 left in the game, Glenburn went on top 43-23 off a 13-6 run. Glenburn's dominance ended here, as Holbrook got hot and ran off 14 unanswered points to cut the Chargers lead to 43-37 with one minute remaining in the game. The Chargers added the only additional point in the final 60 seconds to hang on and come away with the win.

Eve Wiles scored a team high 16 points and Emily Caulkins added 12 points to lead the Chargers in scoring. Grace Labree had nine points, Megan Guy scored five, and Lily Wilcox had two points. Glenburn went 8-for-14 (57 percent) from the free throw line.

Emma Jameson scored a game high 19 points and Jillian Ford added 12 points to lead Holbrook in scoring. Julia Turner scored four, and Chloe Davis chipped in with two points. Holbrook went 1-for-5 (20 percent) from the charity stripe.

Glenburn will face No. 2 seed Hermon in the championship game on Saturday, Feb. 1 at Brewer High School. Game time still to be determined.
