Red Riots JV girls hold off late Brewer rally for win

BREWER - Saturday morning at Brewer High School, the Orono girls JV team held off a couple of second half rally's by the Brewer 1st team to head back home with a 35-30 victory over the Witches.

The Red Riots led 11-7 after the first quarter, and they out scored Brewer 10-6 in the second quarter to take a 21-13 lead into the half time break.

Brewer pulled to within four points of the Red Riots in the third quarter when Olivia Melvin drained a 3-point basket with 2:45 left in the period to cut the Orono lead to four points at 26-22. Orono rallied back to close out the period on a 6-0 run to take a 10 point, 32-22, lead into the final quarter.

Brewer rallied again in the final period to pull with five of Orono, as the Witches out scored the Red Riots 8-3 in the quarter. Orono's only points were by Hannah Sinclair on a 3-point basket, but the Witches could not overcome the third quarter deficit.

Sinclair led Orono in scoring with 11 points, while Ali Sapier added nine points and Emerson Watson had eight points. Sydney Ronco scored five points, and Abby Deschaine chipped in with two points.

Orono had one 3-point basket by Sinclair, and they went 6-for-17 (35 percent) from the free throw line.

Melvin scored 11 points and Makayla Dore had 10 points to pace the Witches in scoring. Kaylee Dore added five points, Olivia Healy scored two points, and both Averie Nichols and Allie Merrow had one point.

Brewer had four 3-point baskets, three by Melvin and one from K. Dore, and they shot 4-for-10 (40 percent) from the charity stripe.
