Messalonskee dominates Brewer with a lopsided win

BREWER – The Messalonskee girls basketball team has struggled this season finding the rim causing them to go 2-3 to start the season. Thursday night in Brewer the real team showed up and the offense was closer to what we will be seeing coming from this team at the end of the season.

Their size, speed, passing, floor spacing, and the defense was what propelled them to a 48-10 win over the stifled Brewer varsity girls. There shooting was good enough to put up 48 points against a good defensive team and they missed a number of shots in the paint themselves.

Brewer, on the other hand, could not get anything going all night. They were outsized causing them to get one shot and be done most of the night and when you are off on your shooting that is what can lead to a 10 point night. Being as outsized as the Witches were created some outlandish mismatches that certainly helped the Eagles.

Kensie Dore led the Witches with five points; Janessa Bishop three; and Josie Pece two.

Brewer only went to the foul line for four shots where they went 1-of-4 (25 percent). They had one three-pointer from Dore early in the game to give Brewer the 3-2 lead and the only lead they would have all night.

Gabriella Smart led the Eagles with 14 points; Jordan Devine seven; Danielle Hall, Mackenzie Mayo, and Ella Smith four each; Sarah Lowell, Grace Wener, and Norgan Genness two each.

Messalonskee was 5-of-8 (63 percent) from the foul line. The Eagles had one three-pointer from Wener. She put up a shot from 10 feet behind the arc at the buzzer that was nothing but net to end the quarter.

Brewer falls to 1-5 and will travel to Erskine Academy of South China Monday, Dec. 30 for a 1 p.m. tip-off.
