Bangor girls sweep Brewer in an afternoon cross-town rivalry

BREWER – The Brewer girls hosted Bangor Saturday afternoon where the Witches fell to the Rams in both the junior varsity (42-33) and the varsity (54-39), games.

In the varsity game, the Witches played well in the first half trailing by two, 19-17, at the half time break. The Bangor defense took the 3-point shot away for most of the second half and as outsized as Brewer was they had a hard time penetrating the paint leaving Bangor with a 34-28 lead after three quarters and outscored the Witches 20-11 in the final stanza to take home the 54-39 win.


Brewer had a hot hand from behind the 3-point line in the first half knocking down five off them with just one 2-point basket in the half. That along with some good defense kept the Witches in the game. In the second half, Brewer had just two more 3-pointers ending the game with seven.

Scoring for Bangor was Abbie Quinn with a game-high 20 points; Libby Fleming 14; Maggie Cowperthwaite 10; Rowan Andrews seven; and Abby Fleming three.

The Rams were 8-of-12 (67 percent) from the foul line and had two 3-pointers, both from junior guard L. Fleming.

For Brewer, Grace Robertson and Kenzie Dore had 12 points each; Brooke Merrow and Kathryn Austin four each; Riley Umel three; and Sarah Kiley and Janessa Bishop two each.

The Witches were 8-of-11 (73 percent) from behind the charity stripe. Their seven 3-pointers came from Dore with four, Robertson two, and Umel one.

Brewer will travel to Farmington to take on Mt. Blue Monday, Dec. 23 for a 5 p.m. game.  Bangor will make the trip to Auburn to take on Edward Little on Monday with their game also starting at 5 p.m.

In the JV game, Bangor came out strong and never really let up as Brewer struggled with the Rams defense leading to a 42-33 Ram win.

Bangor led after each quarter, 14-6, 13-7, for a 27-13 half-time advantage. In the third quarter, Brewer the scoring 11-4 to cut the deficit to 31-24 Bangor heading into the final quarter where the Rams cruised to the 42-33 win.

Scoring for Bangor was Lilly Rice with a team-high 14 points; Samantha Erb eight; Carmen Maddix and Taylor King five each; Winnie French and Lane Barrow four each; and Cassidy Ireland two.

The young Rams were 7-of-17 (41 percent) from the foul line. They had one three-pointer from Maddix.

For Brewer, Josephine Pece had a game-high 16 points; Trea Broussard eight; Makayla Dore and Jordan Doak four each; and Jazlynn Eaton one.

The Witches were 7-of-13 (54 percent) from the foul line.
