Old Town Y squeezes out semifinal win over Hermon in overtime

GLENBURN - Sunday afternoon at the Glenburn School, the No. 3 Old Town Y overcame a two point deficit with eight seconds remaining in regulation to force the game into overtime. Old Town then out scored No. 2 Hermon 7-5 in the overtime period to come away with a 50-48 win in the Eastern Maine Basketball League 5/6A girls semifinal game.

Old Town jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead to start the game, and hung on to the lead for the entire first half leading 24-18 over Hermon at the buzzer.

Over the first two minutes of the second half, Hermon cut the Old Town lead to 24-22 with a 4-0 run, but Old Town went on an 11-5 run and stretched out their lead to 35-27 with 6:56 remaining in regulation. Hermon got back in the game with an 8-0 run tying the game at 35-35 on a Hope Curry basket with 4:20 left on the clock.

Hermon took their first lead of the game on two free throws by Curry with 3:05 to play for a 39-37 score. The lead was short lived as Old Town scored to tie the game back up at 39-39. Hermon regained the lead (43-41) with 23 seconds left on two free throws by Curry, but Old Town's Claire Gaetani scored with eight seconds left on the clock to tie the game at 43-43 and send it into overtime.

Old Town's Gaetani scored the first basket in overtime for the 45-43 lead, and Old Town would not give up the lead. With 2:20 left in the extra period, Gaetani scored again to give Old Town the 47-43 lead. Hermon made it a one point game at 47-46 Old Town, but a 3-point basket by Taylor Loring put the game away for Old Town with 26 seconds left to play and a 50-46 lead. Hermon managed one more score for the 50-48 final tally.

Gaetani scored 25 points to pace Old Town, and Loring also had double digits with 10 points. Ava Braslett added six points, Liz Magoon scored four, Lily Wotton had three points, and Ally Caron added two points to round out the Old Twon scoring. They had one 3-point basket by Loring, and they went 11-for-26 (42 percent) from the charity stripe.

Hermon's Curry joined Old Town's Gaetani in scoring a game high 25 points, and Brooke Gallop added 13 points to help lead the Jr. Hawks in scoring. Also scoring for Hermon was Braelynn Wilcox (7), Olivia Johnston (2), and Katie Fowler (1). Hermon went 8-for-19 (42 percent) from the free throw line.
