Broncos strong second half propel them past the visiting Windjammers


 
HAMPDEN – The Hampden Academy girls varsity basketball team hosted Camden Hills of Rockport in a holiday break early afternoon game.

This was a scrappy game, yet not a lot of fouls. Low scoring as it took both teams a while to get going.  Camden led after the first quarter 7-4 and held a 17-14 halftime advantage. Hampden came out in the second half a different team, outscoring the Windjammers 14-9 to take a 28- 26 lead into the final stanza. The scoring in the fouth quarter was won at the foul line with Hampden making 5-6 to once again outscore Camden Hills 10-6 to take the 38-32 win.

The Broncos were led by Lucy Wiles with a game high 21 points. Wiles carried the team in the third quarter scoring 10 of the teams 14 points and went 2-2 from the foul line and knocked down a 3-pointer in the fourth to help seal the victory. Also scoring for Hampden was, Lauren Voteur added seven; Caitlin Murphy had five; Aubrey Shaw three and Destiny Moores with 2 points. 

The Broncos knocked down three 3-pointers, one each from Wiles, Shaw, and Voteur. They were 7-of-15 (47 percent) from the foul line.

Leah Jones led the way for Camden with 12 points; Maddison Cronkite added six; Kristen Jones and Rose Tohanczyn had four each; and Isabella DeBrosky, Thea Laukka and Tallulah Marks all had 2-points each.

The Windjammers also had three 3-pointers, two from Leah Jones, and one from Cronkite. Camden went 3-of-5 (60 percent) from the charity stripe. 

Hampden Academy goes to 2-1 on the season and will host Cony Saturday, Dec. 30 at 1:30 p.m.

Camden Hills falls to 3-4 and will travel to Farmington Saturday, Dec. 30 for a 12:30 p.m. game against Mt. Blue.
