Wagner girls advance to championship with win over Orono

HAMPDEN - Saturday afternoon at The Stable inside Hampden Academy, the No. 1 Samuel L. Wagner girls advanced to the Championship game on Tuesday as they cruised to a 37-25 victory over No. 4 Orono in the Penobscot Valley Middle League  "A" flight semifinal game.

A 13-4 opening quarter followed by a 9-0 second quarter put the Clippers on top to stay at 22-4 heading to the half time break.

The two teams tied at 6-6 through the third quarter, but Orono topped Wagner 15-7 in the final period behind 13 points from Sophie Neville. Unfortunately for the Red Riots, the deficit margin was to much for them to overcome.

Madi DiCentes scored a team high 11 points to lead the Clippers in scoring. Sadi Tardif added seven points, Brook Berry had six, and Makayla Shaw scored four points. Blayne Tardif had three points, and both Izzy Krummel and Mia Curtis scored two points. (The Official scorebook was missing two Wagner points).

Wagner had one 3-point basket by DiCentes, and they went 6-for-8 (75 percent) from the foul line.

Neville scored a game high 13 points to lead Orono in scoring. Other scorers for the Red Riots included Nina Mitchell (5), Madi Sinclair (3), Finley Sanders (2), and Carmen Miller (2).

Orono did not have any long range baskets, and they shot 5-for-13 (38 percent) from the charity stripe.

The Wagner girls will take on No. 2 Glenburn on Tuesday night, February 15, for the PVML "A" Flight Championship. Game is scheduled for a 7:30 tip off.
