Lawrence with a dominating win over the Brewer varsity girls

BREWER – The Brewer varsity girls got off to a strong start in this game. A couple of quick three's and they were up 6-2. At the end of the first-quarter Brewer was up 14-12. With a little over 3-minutes to play in the second, the Witches were up 16-12 when things fell apart.

The Bulldogs picked up the shooting and Brewer could not find a way to the basket resulting in a 28-16 Lawrence halftime advantage. Heading into the fourth quarter Lawrence had upped its lead to 42-20 where the subs from both teams played the majority of the final quarter with Lawrence coming out with a 52-36 win.

This loss was not from a lack of trying. The Brewer girls play good defense. In fact sometimes very good defense. And usually, as the saying goes, defense wins games. However, you still have to score on your end. That is where Brewer finds itself in trouble. After a really good first quarter scoring 14 points, the Witches were only able to score two in the second quarter and four in the third. In the fourth quarter, Janessa Bishop was the only starter to score and the Witches put up 16 points while holding Lawrence to 10.

Leading the way for Lawrence was Sarah Poli with a game-high 19 points; Savannah Weston and Hope Bouchard seven each; Megan Curtis six; Denelle Eldridge four; Alyssa Bourque three; and Makenzie Nadeau, Victoria Dunphy, and Eva Brisk two.

Lawrence was 10-of-14 (71 percent) from the foul line. They had four 3-pointers in the game, two from Curtis, and one each from Bourque and Bouchard.

For Brewer, Kenzie Dore had eight points; Brooke Merrow seven; Riley Umel six; Trea Broussard and Sarah Kiley four each; Grace Robertson three; and Jordan Doak and Janessa Bishop two each.

The Witches were 8-of-13 (62 percent) from the charity stripe. They also knocked down four 3-pointers, two from Dore and one each from Robertson and Umel.

Brewer falls to 1-7 on the season and will hit the halfway mark in their schedule with a home game Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 6:30 p.m., against Nokomis of Newport. In the season opener, these two teams met and Nokomis came away with a one-point win. Coach Chris Horr and his players and assistants will see what they can do to reverse this next one.
