Brewer JV girls fall to Lawrence on the hardwood

BREWER – The Brewer junior varsity girls basketball team hosted Lawrence of Fairfield Thursday night with the visitors taking home a 40-23 win over the young Witches.

Brewer took a 9-8 first-quarter lead but dropped to a 14-13 Lawrence lead at the halftime break. The Bulldogs took a 22-17 advantage into the final stanza where they outscored the Witches 18-6 to cruise to the win.

Leading the way for the Bulldogs was freshman Ali Higgins who led all scorers with 14 points; Emily Hagerty seven; Ali Nickerson and Dakodah Aldrich six each; Denelle Eldridge four; and Brianna Poulin two.

Lawrence was 5-of-9 (56 percent) from the foul line. They knocked down three 3-pointers, two from Higgins, and one from Hagerty.

For Brewer, Jordan Doak led the team with six points; Trea Broussard, and Kelly Dicarlo four each; Dominique Ouellette three; Makayla Dore and Kaylee Dore two each; and Melaina Eaton and Josie Pece one each.

The Witches went 7-of-24 (29 percent) from the free-throw line. They had two 3-pointers, one each from Doak and Ouellette.

Brewer's trouble started with the loss of center Josie Pece to what is hoped is just a sprained ankle. She got it iced, taped up, and came back for a short time before she decided it was not working and sat out the rest of the night. Couple that with 17 missed foul shots when you lose by 17 and this was a winnable game for the young Witches. Brewer will get another chance Jan. 24 when they head to Fairfield to take on the Bulldogs again.
