Closing seconds free throws lead to Broncos JV boys win over Erskine

HAMPDEN - The Hampden Academy JV boys scored 59 points in their game, but it took a few free throws in the closing seconds of the game to give the Broncos a 59-55 win over the Erskine Academy Eagles at The Stable inside Hampden Academy on Saturday afternoon.

The game was close throughout the contest, although the Broncos found themselves trailing 11-1 in the first quarter with 3:35 remaining. Hampden finally battled back, and the period closed with Erskine on top 14-10. Hampden out scored the Eagles 20-14 in the second period to take a 30-28 lead at half time.

Erskine got the advantage in the third period, out scoring Hampden 16-14, and tied the game up at 44-44 heading to the final period. The Broncos took a lead late in the period, but allowed the Eagles right back in and the game was once again tied at 55-55 with under 30 seconds remaining. Inside the final 15 seconds of the game, Adam Pinkos and Victor Van Dorn knocked down a combined three foul shots to give Hampden the lead at 58-55. One more free throw closed out the scoring as the Eagles ran out of time.

Jackson Grover and Pinkos scored a team high 14 points, and Landen Gabric added 12 points to lead the Broncos in scoring. Van Dorn scored eight points, Ryan White and Mason Grund each had three points, Gabe Beswick and Brayden Smith each added two points, and Brennon Tiensivu chipped in with one point.

Hampden had nine 3-point baskets, four by Grover, two each by Van Dorn and Pinkos, and one by Grund. They shot 16-for-22 (73 percent) from the free throw line.

Kaden Doughty scored a game high 15 points and Brennan Wade added 14 points to pace the Eagles in scoring. Nate Collins and Xavian Marable each scored eight points, and Grady Hotham added six points. Isaac Hayden scored three points, and Dan Tibbetts added one point.

Erskine had five 3-point baskets, two each by Doughty and Marable, and one by Hayden. They shot 6-for-12 (50 percent) from the charity stripe.
