Hampden girls use first half to power past Brewer

BREWER – The Brewer Witches girls soccer team hosted Hampden Academy at Doyle field Thursday night under the lights falling 3-1 to the visiting Broncos.

Hampden dominated from the first touch of the ball in the first half scoring all three of their goals in the first 16:45 of the game ending the half up 3-0.

Brewer made it a 3-1 game scoring on a penalty kick in the second half, and also played a much better half, being more aggressive to the ball and defending a strong Hampden performance much better.

Just 3:10 into the game Hampden's Maya Brown took a pass over the heads of the defenders from Sydney Hodgdon and buried it in the back of the net for the 1-0 lead. At 26:03 Eliza Parker took a pass from Samantha Quesnel. Olivia Airey finished out the scoring for the Broncos at 23:05 with an assist from Parker.

The Witches scored the lone goal of the second half on a penalty kick that resulted from a Hampden handball. Morgan Honey took the shot for the Witches putting the ball to the left side into the back of the goal.

Hampden had the advantage in shots 21-12 and also in corners, 3-1.

Adie Hughes was in goal for the Broncos where she had seven saves for the win. Brewer's Bella Tanis played extremely well in the loss, making 11 saves to keep the team in the game.

Hampden Academy goes to 4-2 with the win putting them in seventh place in the Maine Principles Heal Point standings for Class A North. The Top nine teams qualify for the post-season. The Broncos will next host Lewiston Saturday, Oct. 5, at 11 a.m.

Brewer falls to 2-6-1 with the loss and sits in eleventh place. The Witches will travel to Mount Desert Island for a 5 p.m. game Saturday, Oct. 5.
