Maine Sports Report: Oceanside girls mercy Troy Howard for the win

ROCKLAND – The 8th-grade girls softball team from Oceanside has had a hard time getting games in this season, but Thursday the sun was out and the game was played with Oceanside taking a 14-2 five-inning win.

Troy Howard took a 2-0 lead in the first inning without a hit and held that lead until the bottom of the third when Oceanside got on the board for the first time with three runs.

Oceanside exploded for seven runs in the fourth inning and put the game away with four runs in the bottom of the fifth with one out.

Whitamore pitched for Oceanside allowing two runs on two hits and six walks while striking out 10. Whitamore struggled out of the gate with three walks, a hit batter and a strikeout in the first five batters. She settled down after that and pitched an outstanding game.

Hitting for the Mariners was, Jessica Watkinson (single, double, run), Robinson (2 singles, 2 walks, 2 runs), Grace Woodman (triple, run), Whitamore (2 singles, walk, 3 runs), Pease (single, run), Waldron (double, walk, 2 runs), Butman, Barstow, Bickford, and Brown (walk, run each), and Autumn Harvey (walk). (first names were not available other than players I know).

Hall took the circle for Troy Howard where she allowed 14 runs on nine hits and eight walks while striking out four.

Chronometer and Metcalf had the only two hits for the Lions. Hastings, and Wetherington (walk, run each), and Hopkins, Gouchnour, Simmons, and Staples (walk each).
