It's A First; Vinalhaven takes home State Championship and Gold Ball

BANGOR  – The Lady Vikings of Vinalhaven are the new Class D girls champions after defeating Northern Class D champ Shead at the Cross Insurance Center 55-44 Saturday afternoon.

This is the first ever gold ball for the school and the pride of the community was evident behind them as they filled the stands with hope and pride in their girls and coaches. The game began in earnest with both teams struggling and the facility fairly quiet until Deja Doughty hit a shot almost two minutes into the game and the Viking fans were not quiet the rest of the day.

The Vikings led after each quarter, 13-9, 24-20 at the half and 41-30 after three quarters of play. Amber Shane came off the bench and scored five points to help lead the Vikings to the victory.

Vinalhaven is a team that plays well together and the did today, but in this game is was Gilleyanne Davis-Oakes that was the driving force, dominating the boards and pouring in a game-high 28 points. Davis-Oakes scored 17 of the teams 24 first half points.

Scoring for Vinalhaven was Davis-Oakes with 28 points; Paige Dennison and Cheyenne Bickford with six each; and Ashlyn Littlefield, Shane, and Doughty had five each.

The Vikings were 9-of-11 (82 percent) from the foul line and they had three 3-pointers, two from Dennison and one from Littlefield.

For Shead, Holly Preston had 22 points; Cassidy Wilder 11; Katelyn Mitchell seven; and Madison Greenlaw and Halle Sullivan two each.

The Tigerettes were 7-of-13 (54 Percent) from the foul line and they had three 3-pointers, two from Mitchell and one from Preston.

Other members of the Vinalhaven Class D State Champions are Hannah Newton, Marina Davis, Rosanna Morel, Corey Lazaro, and Justice Grant. The team is coached by Sandy Nelson and assisted by Sam Bickford and Nicole Osgood.
