Orono High School cancels 2019 Varsity football season

Wednesday evening, Orono High School Athletic Administrator Mike Archer issued the following press release regarding the Varsity football program at the high school for the 2019 season:

As a result of low numbers and difficulties with positional personnel, Orono High School will forego the 2019 Varsity football schedule and request a JV schedule.

Our administration feels that this is in the best interest of our current players safety and well being and also maintains our ability to retain a varsity schedule for the 2020 season.

We just met with our parents and players and although there is some disappointment, I think there is also some sense of relief  and optimism that our players will be placed in a more safe and competitive setting on a  weekly basis.  We look at this as a great opportunity to keep Orono football alive for our current players as well as our future players at the Middle School.

Games will now be played on Monday evenings at 6:00pm.  Admission will remain the same, concessions will be operated by our Booster Club.  A full schedule will be completed by the beginning of next week.   I will work with Big East Commissioner Bunky Dow to assist in filling the void with other opponents due to the void we have created in their schedules.

We apologize for the inconvenience that this creates for our 2019 opponents.

Orono Athletic Administrator, Mike Archer will field any questions from media either via email or phone.   We wish the best of luck to all of our 2019 opponents on their upcoming season.   We appreciate your understanding of our situation.

  1. As a mother to an Orono senior I wish my son and I were made aware of this "meeting". Families and players had no say in this. It really did not matter what we thought anyway....decision was already made. This is so no fair to this years seniors!
