Hermon Lady Hawks to host 10 team summer league tournament

HERMON - On Saturday, July 8 and Sunday, July 9, the Hermon High School girls basketball team will host a 10 team tournament at the high school.

The 10 teams include Cabot High School, Central, Ellsworth, Freeport, Hampden Academy, host team Hermon, Houlton, MDI, Orono, and Winslow.

Cabot High School, which plays in the 12-team Central Vermont League, will make the four to five hour trip to Hermon from Cabot, Vermont to play in the tournament. In Vermont, they are a Division 4 team, much like our small school Class C teams. Cabot, ranked number 4, had a pretty good 2016-17 season and lost to the eventual state champs in the semifinals.

Three local teams in the tournament will have new, but not unfamiliar, faces at the coaching helm. Nick Winchester will be taking over at Hampden Academy after two seasons as the Orono head coach. Orono's new head coach is long tome legend John Donato. He brings with him 40 years of coaching history, in which he has amassed 547 wins, 11 regional titles, and five state championships. Central High School of Corinth has a new head coach in long time boys basketball coach Jamie Russell. In his 32 years of coaching boys, he has picked up 340 wins at three different high schools. Russell is a physical education teacher at Central, and the upcoming 2017-18 season will be his first as a girls coach.
